The Instructor Development Course or IDC is an intensive program which gives Divemasters additional training and skills to be able to teach diving.

After successfully completing the IDC, candidates are then able to take the Instructor Examination (IE). IE's are run by PADI, not individual dive clubs, and occur throughout the year. The examination takes place over 2 days where candidates are evaluated on what they have learnt at the IDC. On passing the IE the candidate is awarded the Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) rating.
